I was stumbling down a country road yesterday, cold and hungry. It was late afternoon and my belly was grumbling so I decided to risk going into Polana to get some food. As I made it into town, I heard a shot, and saw about 10 guys in the middle of the street, geared to the teeth. I immediately turned and ran, fearing the worst, however, they ran me down from behind, got me on the ground and soon realized I wasn't a threat. Then I heard the reassuring words, "you're OK mate come with us". and then was escorted upstairs to Mic and Vic's Fish shop.
Well, it wasn't what I expected. I expected to be tortured in the top room of a corner pub in a rough town in the middle of no where. I expected to be robbed at gun point and have my balls shot off by a 22 Sporter, but no, I was told, "take anything you want mate". So I did.
I had apperatiff of Nota cola followed by several cans of Kvass to get over the anxiety. This was followed by an amuse-bouche of kiwi from the sack which got the hunger flowing.
The first course was superb. It was a lightly marinated Tomato and Zucchini anti-pasta with orange dressing. Perfectly grilled zucchini and beautiful fresh slices of tomato. Nothing beats local sourced heirloom produce like this in a country village like Polona.
Second course was Mic and Vic's signature over roasted sardines with hand made spaghetti. You ever hear people complain about waiting for food in a restaurant? "This is taking ages, what the hell are they doing catching the fish"? Well that's EXACTLY what they do at this place. Mic and Vic CATCH the fish and cook it to order. No, not out of a tank, they literally CATCH the fish. It takes a while, but that's why we have Kvass and company while we wait.
The third course was an epicureans dream. It was slow smoked venison steak with tactical bacon from Pete's Meats. A true hungry hunters delight, but served up and decorated in true Chernarus Nouvelle Cuisine style. A brilliant new twist on a classic country dish and served up in hungry man potions.
Dessert was a light peach parfait, again with local sourced produce. A perfectly complimenting finish to cleanse the palate after the heavy meal.
After loosening a couple of buttons in my Gorka jacket, as my belly was stuffed, I went down stairs and hung out by the fire and managed a few more cans of Kvass while exchanging conversation with the patrons of the pub. However, this wonderful food was like sandman's sand and unable to go home, I went upstairs bid everyone a good night, logged off and retired for the evening.
To rate this place I have to go by different rules than I normally do. Normally the waiting time kills points, but that's part of the charm and experience here and that's exactly what it's like eating at Mic and Vic's, an experience. Normally I would critique the service, but there was no service, there was only hospitality. Service is what you get at the police headquarters cantine in Electro. Hospitality doesn't have a price on it. It comes from the heart. The decor wasn't french provincial, it was a simple Chernarus country pub, with all the warmth and coziness it could offer.
My rating: 3 Stars Michelin
Best Restaurant in Chernarus 2015.
