Research from an classified militarized bioweapons division was being shipped to a laboratory in Iceland. The plan was to keep it isolated from civilization.
While en route, the transport vessel hit a storm that lasted for three days and three nights. The ship spiraled off course and eventually found its way to Rify, Northeastern Chernarus.
When dawn came up over the horizon, the ship was in two pieces where it is found today. The locals claim the undead came from that ship and infected the region. Others say the hospitals became flooded with patients exhibiting symptoms of Cholera.
Resources became slim, people turned on each other, the infection grew stronger and help never came. Locals that survived the infection, huddled together to survive the winter.
Eventually help did come, but in the form of research teams to collect data on the current state of infection. They didn't bring medicine, food, or news of the outside world.
Locals that approached them were killed on sight. This is when colonies were formed. Former law enforcement banded together to protect the weak. Criminals found each other and colonized their own region. Gypsies settled in the mountains without a care in the world.
When the summer came around, local farmers were able to harvest crops. EMT, doctors and nurses pooled their resources to offer medical services for survivors.
Locals speak of a priest that roams the ruins giving sermons to those that will listen. Reports of baptism's, book burnings and legend has it...a witch burning or two.
